SUFFOLK -- New jobs and upgrades to the Lipton Tea processing plant are on the way, thanks to a pyramid-shaped tea bag.

The new tea bag line will add a dozen employees and bring a $7 million investment in new manufacturing machinery and facility upgrades to the plant, according to an announcement by Suffolk's Department of Economic Development.

Lipton, produced by Unilever, is the world's biggest tea brand. Nearly all of its tea bags sold throughout North America are produced at the facility off West Washington Street.

The new tea bags - which were introduced in October, according to Lipton's pyramid teas Web site - come in six flavors and are designed to "allow long-leaf tea more room to infuse optimal aroma, color and taste," according to the announcement.

"Food processing continues to play a major role in Suffolk's economy, and this latest development speaks to the efficiency and reliability of this facility and their outstanding work force," said Suffolk Mayor Linda Johnson in a statement.
